YOUNG DOCTORS’ OATH AT UNIBA FACULTY OF MEDICINE: BEGINNING A JOURNEY OF SERVICE WITH KNOWLEDGE AND EMPATHY

Batam, September 30, 2026 – The Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Batam, held the Young Doctors’ Oath Ceremony (S1) for the Even Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Year at Rumengan Hall, Universitas Batam. The ceremony marked an important stage in medical education before students enter clinical training and begin interacting directly with patients.

The ceremony was attended by medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Batam, who had completed the preceding stage of their education. Through this ceremony, the young doctors are prepared to enter the clinical environment while taking on greater responsibilities in applying their medical knowledge and upholding humanitarian values.

The event was also attended by structural officials within Universitas Batam and featured remarks from the Rector of Universitas Batam, Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng., IPU., ASEAN Eng., and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Batam, dr. Fachrul Jamal, Sp.An-KIC.

In his remarks, the Rector of Universitas Batam highlighted the development of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), as one of the challenges that future doctors will face.

He emphasized that technological advancement will not eliminate the need for the medical profession. Technology can serve as a tool to assist human work, but the human aspect of healthcare will continue to require the role of doctors.

The challenge for doctors today is AI. In technical fields, much of the work may be assisted by machines, but when it comes to human beings, doctors will always be needed,” said the Rector.

The Rector also encouraged the young doctors to view developments in healthcare from a broader perspective. He referred to the increasing life expectancy of the Indonesian population as one indication of advances in science, medicine, and healthcare services.

As they enter the clinical stage, the Rector advised the young doctors not to focus solely on learning from physicians, but also to build good relationships with nurses and other healthcare professionals in the hospital.

When you are in the hospital, interact well with nurses, senior doctors, and all healthcare professionals so that you can gain valuable knowledge and experience,” he advised.

Meanwhile, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Batam, dr. Fachrul Jamal, Sp.An-KIC, emphasized that the Young Doctors’ Oath Ceremony was not merely a formal ceremony, but a significant milestone marking the beginning of an important stage in the students’ medical education journey.

He explained that the students had completed one stage of their education and would now enter the clinical environment, where they would gain a more realistic understanding of the life and responsibilities of a doctor.

You have completed one stage of your medical education. Today marks the beginning of an important journey as doctors. You will enter the clinical setting, where you will experience the realities of life as a doctor,” said dr. Fachrul.

According to him, the education that students have completed serves as a foundation for their next stage. Upon entering clinical training, young doctors will interact directly with patients and encounter real-life situations that require the application of medical knowledge, communication skills, and empathy.

Being a doctor is not only about how much knowledge you possess, but how much of that knowledge you can apply with empathy and humanity,” he emphasized.

Dr. Fachrul also reminded the young doctors that patients must never be viewed merely as objects of learning. Every patient is a human being with a family, hopes, and fears when facing a health condition.

Patients are not merely objects of learning. They are human beings who have families and hopes and who may be experiencing fear. We have a responsibility to reassure them.

In addition to medical knowledge and clinical skills, the young doctors were also reminded of the moral and professional responsibilities that accompany their journey toward becoming physicians.

The oath they took marks the beginning of their responsibility to provide healthcare services without discrimination based on background or social circumstances. They are also expected to consistently uphold professionalism, ethics, and the good reputation of their alma mater throughout their clinical education and future professional careers.

Through the Young Doctors’ Oath Ceremony, the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Batam, continues to foster the development of future doctors who possess not only academic and clinical competence, but also the ability to integrate knowledge with empathy, responsibility, and humanitarian values.

The upcoming clinical training stage will provide the young doctors with an opportunity to apply the knowledge they have acquired, learn from real-world experiences, interact with patients and their families, and collaborate with various healthcare professionals.

Thus, their journey as young doctors is not merely a process of gaining clinical experience, but also a process of developing character and professional responsibility as future healthcare professionals dedicated to serving the community.
