FACULTY OF ENGINEERING, UNIVERSITAS BATAM, HOLDS WORKSHOP ON AI UTILIZATION AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF OBE-BASED LEARNING INSTRUMENTS
BATAM – Universitas Batam held an academic development workshop focusing on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in preparing lecture modules and developing learning instruments based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE). The workshop took place on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at the Postgraduate Building Auditorium of Universitas Batam. The event aimed to enhance lecturers’ competencies in integrating technology into the learning process and supporting improvements in academic quality.
In his opening remarks, Rector of Universitas Batam, Prof. Dr. Ir. Samsul Rizal, M.Eng., IPU., ASEAN Eng., emphasized the importance of utilizing AI to support academic activities, particularly in preparing Semester Learning Plans (Rencana Pembelajaran Semester or RPS) and developing lecture modules. Through this workshop, lecturers are expected to utilize AI technology effectively to update learning materials in accordance with advances in science and technology and the evolving needs of industry.
The Rector also explained that the academic training on AI utilization featured a lecturer from Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) as a speaker. This collaboration was expected to broaden academic perspectives and enhance lecturers’ competencies in utilizing AI to support learning planning, implementation, and evaluation.
The workshop consisted of two sessions. The first session, entitled “Developing Lecture Modules Using AI,” was delivered by Dr.-Ing. Ir. Rudi Kurniawan, S.T., M.Eng., a senior lecturer at Universitas Syiah Kuala. The session was moderated by Dr. Ir. John Friadi, S.Kom., M.Si., M.TI., Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Batam. The discussion focused on utilizing AI to assist in the preparation and development of lecture modules.
The second session, entitled “Developing Learning Plans for Outcome-Based Education (OBE),” was presented by Dr. Hasan Yudie Sastra, DSA, a Mechanical Engineering lecturer at Universitas Batam. This session was also moderated by Dr. Ir. John Friadi, S.Kom., M.Si., M.TI. The material focused on developing learning instruments to support the implementation of an OBE-based curriculum.
On this occasion, the Rector also expressed his hope that strengthening academic quality would serve as a foundation for the development of a Master’s Program in Mechanical Engineering at Universitas Batam. This plan aligns with Batam’s continued growth as an industrial and manufacturing hub, creating an increasing demand for human resources with advanced engineering competencies who can address the challenges and needs of the industrial sector.
Through this workshop, Universitas Batam reaffirms its commitment to enhancing lecturers’ competencies, strengthening the implementation of the OBE-based curriculum, and promoting the responsible use of AI in academic activities. These efforts are expected to improve the quality of teaching and learning while supporting study program development and the achievement of Universitas Batam’s educational quality targets.
